Greater rhea
  • Species: Greater rhea (Rhea americana)
  • Offspring: 13-17
  • Habitats: South America, Brazil, Argentina
  • Greater rhea

Greater rheas occupy open, grassy areas. They are able to swim, they visit lakes in large flocks to drink and to bathe. One male usually mates with more - even a dozen of - females, then he escorts them to his nest. This way a number of 15-30 eggs can collect together. The male incubates alone and guards the autophagous, fluffy chicks.
